Nanoparticles have been making headlines for years due to their role in advanced agriculture technologies, medicine, and even food science. Recently, research has highlighted the presence of nanoparticles in one of the world’s most iconic beverages: Coca-Cola. But what exactly does this mean? Are these particles harmful? And how do they form? Let’s dive in to understand more.

The formation of the nanoparticles that have been found in Coca-Cola lies in the beverage’s complex chemistry: the mixture of phosphoric and citric acids, carbonation, sugar and various flavorings. These components interact on a molecular level, for example, acids and interact with trace metals that are found naturally in the water and can lead to the formation of metallic or mineral based nanoparticles.

The carbonation process creates a highly acidic and pressurized environment that has the potential to cause nano-sized particles to form. Further packaging and handling can introduce high-speed mixing and exposure to elevated temperatures. These conditions can break down larger molecules into nano-sized particles as well.

It’s important to note that the nanoparticles in Coca-Cola aren’t new, rather our ability to detect nanoparticles is improving. These new detection methods have led to the discovery of nanoparticles whose existence was previously unknown. These new tools are also helpful for people who are developing nanotechnologies as they aid in our ability to develop new methods for making particles.

While the newly discovered nanoparticles in Coca-Cola are the products of side reactions and uncontrolled chain reactions, the nanoparticles that are in Nano-Yield™ products are intentionally engineered to be the ideal size and concentration for delivery of nutrients and active ingredients.

Nano-Yield uses very specific raw materials and methods in a laboratory setting after which, the final products undergo a rigorous quality control process to ensure the specifications are met using the previously mentioned advanced measurement tools.
